in the beginning
Since its inception over thirty years ago, FANGORIA Magazine has been evolving alongside the ever changing forms of journalism. Beginning as a fantasy themed spin off of STARLOG Magazine in 1978, FANTASTICA. However due to a lawsuit FANTASTICA was forced to change it’s name. It was then, in 1979, that FANGORIA was born.

It would not be until the 7th issue that FANGORIA would find its footing and go on to make horror history. It was at that moment FANGORIA would be forever known as the leading magazine in the horror industry; ultimlatly becoming the first in fright since 1979.
By 1985 FANGORIA was on the track to successes, becoming unbound by its tangible form in the way of the very first FANGORIA Weekend of Horrors. This highly successful horror convention was a way for fans to not only read about their horrific heroes, but now to actually meet them and other like them. Two years later, and a date that would turn out to be a landmark year for the magazine was the promotion of then managing editor to editor-in-chief, Tony Timpone. Three years later Timpone hired Michael Gingold as his managing editor and from there the two created a monster of a magazine.
As of 2016, Timpone has moved on to become editor emeritus as well as hosting the ever popular FANGORIA free movie screenings, Co-director of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal as well as editing the book Cover to Cover in 2013. Gingold has moved up the ladder, replacing Chris Alexander as editor in chief and is currently bringing FANGORIA into the future of digital journalism. In 2012 Ken Hanley was brought on board as an intern and editorial assistant and since then has made a home at FANGORIA and is currently the managing editor.
